The trustees of the California State University system have delayed their decision about whether to require an extra year of high school math for admission purposes.  And independent group will study the proposal, delaying a decision until 2022.

Our Cal State University system consists of 23 campus across California.  The CSU's have been in the news lately as the CSU Board of Trustees struggle with budget deficits and lack of space for all eligible students.  Here is the latest article from the Los Angeles Times.

Applications for both the University of California and the Cal State University system are due tonight by 11:59 p.m. PST.   UC and CSU also need your SAT or ACT scores.  You can send your scores to one UC campus and one CSU campus and they will be sent to all campuses to which you are applying.  Transcripts and letters of recommendation are not accepted by either system.  However, UC Berkeley may request letters of recommendation from select students, after you submit your application.  Be sure to check your email for confirmation that your application has been received and information about setting up your applicant portals.  

I recently toured San Diego State University; it had been a while since I had visited.  Some important facts:

• SDSU received 83,000 applications last year!
• They admit by major and had a 30% acceptance rate for the 2017 school year.
• Their nursing program is now Direct Admit only!  Students cannot transfer in from a different major.
• Average GPA of admitted students is 3.87.
• If you are attending SDSU and come from outside the San Diego area, you are required to live on-campus for two years. 

SDSU is an excellent and affordable option for our California students!

Two pieces of news from the California State University (CSU) system.  The first is about the elimination of freshman placement tests for math and English.  Students will be able to use their SAT or ACT scores to indicate their level within those subjects, or their scores on the Early Assessment Program testing available through their high school.

​The next is related to the California state budget.  CSU will be considering a program where students who meet the eligibility requirements will be guaranteed a spot at a CSU campus.  This is similar to UC's Eligible in the Local Context program as mentioned in this article.
